At Smitty’s, we know that magazines make homes look amazing. Websites and decorating magazines showcase rooms that are immaculate, totally on trend, and styled perfectly. We also know that our customers don’t live in a magazine. Your homes are actually lived in, which means they are not immaculate and perfectly styled — and that’s perfectly normal.
We want you to see that you can furnish your home with beautiful, stylish, quality furniture and make it work — whatever your lifestyle.
In this blog, we will showcase one of our team members and highlight how they have made beautiful, quality furniture work in their home — it’s all about Real Furniture for Real Life.
Kathy’s bedroom had a 70s oak poster bed and matching bedroom suite. It was dated and big and did not reflect her, or her partner’s, taste.
“I wanted an updated look that reflected both my partner and myself.”, said Kathy. “He loves solid wood and I love soft and sexy. He wanted a TV in the bedroom and I wanted comfort, so we got the adjustable bed. It works out great — I’m cozy and comfortable and he can adjust the mattress to watch his favourite shows.”
Now, with the Serta adjustable bed, the space is warm and comfortable and better reflects us as a couple. “We are a blended family and it’s the second time around for us. This redecorating allowed us to bring a little of him and a little of me in the space. Now, it’s timeless and will take us into our future.”
Headboards were originally created in Ancient Egypt to help keep cold draughts away from the head of the person sleeping in the bed. Headboards were constructed from wood and were designed to encourage the cold air to fall to the floor. Then, in Ancient Greece, headboards became more ornate and featured hand-carved designs and padding for comfort.
Headboards have certainly evolved over the years. Now, a headboard is more than just a functional construction for keeping the draughts away. They also serve a greater purpose than helping to keep your pillows from falling off! The headboard has the potential to be the design focal point of your bedroom, and it can set the tone for the entire room.
At Smitty’s, we believe the headboard is the piece de resistance of your bedroom!
The only question that remains is: What kind of headboard should you get?
Types of Headboards
There are many types of headboards to choose from, ranging in styles from contemporary to classic, and constructed using a variety of materials from wood, to steel, to fabric. Headboards can be purchased independently from your frame but, more often than not, they are sold as part of a complete bed frame, with a matching footboard.
The headboard trend in 2018 is upholstered. These headboards can be affixed directly to the wall over your mattress, or they can come as part of your bed frame structure.
Upholstered headboards may feature a wood trim, nailhead designs, decorative stitching, creative buttons, and much more — it all depends on what sort of look you want to achieve.
Smitty’s Pro Tip: Purchasing a fully-upholstered frame will create a more luxurious look for your bedroom — and, keep in mind that the headboard doesn’t need to match your furniture or bedding. The headboard can accent the space and define a focal point for your room.
Upholstered Headboards & Bed Frames
Decor-Rest designs and builds gorgeous headboards and bases in a wide variety of styles to suit any look. Crafted using beautiful fabrics from around the globe and wrapped around air-dried Canadian maple or birch wood, these upholstered bed frames and headboards are a beautiful addition to any bedroom.
Julien Beaudoin, a manufacturer from Quebec, has an extensive line of stylish, upholstered headboards and bed frames to choose from. Their designs work with adjustable mattresses and come in a range of frames with choices of supports, built-in storage, and customizable fabrics.
Amisco crafts a large variety of upholstered beds, in sizes from twin to king. Their latest creation offers an adjustable headboard which can tilt up to 30 degrees, allowing you to relax and unwind with style.
These days, putting up with a mattress because it only comes in one level of firmness or in one height is not necessary. The latest innovation in mattresses is the custom-made mattress — and it’s truly amazing!
Kingsdown bedMATCH™ allows you to find the mattress that fits your body. Their patented diagnostic system uses over 1,000 scientific calculations and 18 statistical measurements to identify the optimal support for your body.
At Smitty’s, we have been using this science-based technology for over 10 years, with exceptional results! We encourage all our mattress-shopping customers to lie down on our bedMATCH™ Sleep Diagnostic System. In just a couple of minutes, this incredible device will be able to recommend the best sleep solution, based on a detailed analysis of your unique body type.
Kingsdown knows that your ideal mattress should conform to the unique shape and weight of your body. When your spine is properly supported through the night, by this type of mattress, you will awake feeling rested and strong because your blood and oxygen circulation will have been functioning properly while you slept.
How does the bedMATCH™ system work?
It’s a simple and easy process, and you can do it in just a couple of minutes while you’re in the store.
There are three quick steps:
Create a profile by answering a few short questions about your sleep preferences.
Lie down on the test bed for three minutes, while the technology scientifically assesses your measurements and postural support needs.
The bedMATCH™ system will then recommend mattresses that best suit your specific needs.
It’s that easy!
What do the bedMATCH™ recommendations mean?
The recommendations are coded to make them easy to understand and will reflect the mattresses that are available in the showroom.
Each number represents a different type and level of postural support, ranging from extra firm to plush support.
1 = plush support
2 = medium plush support
3 = medium firm support
4 = extra firm support
You can also receive a blended recommendation, that outlines your needs and those of your partner, so you can see the different requirements and make an informed decision about the kind of mattress that will work best for both of you.

Serta is a well-known brand that offers a wide range of mattress styles, ranging from their Perfect Sleeper, to Sertapedic, to the latest iComfort line.
Serta’s latest iComfort mattress was designed with individualized comfort in mind. Crafted with a special gel memory foam, this mattress will:
Relieve pressure points for increased comfort
Provide added support to help with body alignment
Aid in temperature regulation while you sleep
The iComfort mattress is the world’s first to offer a memory coil support layer with hundreds of individually-wrapped, slow-recovery coils that continuously adapt to the contours of your body — without that springy feeling.
Zedbed is one of the few mattress manufacturers to make its own memory foam from start to finish, with facilities in Canada.
Zedbed mattresses do not have inner coils. Instead, they are constructed with an eco-friendly, soy-based memory foam to offer enhanced therapeutic support.
Similar to Serta’s iComfort mattress, the memory foam is designed to:
Help you maintain optimal body alignment
Reduce pressure points and promote better circulation
Welcome to 2018! It’s a new year full of new experiences, new ideas, and new improvements.
The new year gives you a fresh start — like hitting the reset button. It’s a time when many of us make resolutions, where we endeavour to improve our diet, our exercise regimen, or make changes to better our lives and our well-being. One of the best resolutions you can make this new year is to improve your sleep.
Getting a good night’s sleep is one of the most effective ways to improve your overall health.
The Benefits of Good Sleep
There are countless benefits to getting a proper night’s sleep:
Improved Brain Function & Memory
While you sleep, your brain is still working. It’s preparing neural pathways that retain information and enhance your problem-solving skills.
Improved Mood & Reduced Stress
Sleeping helps to calm the body and relieve tension. Studies show that better sleep reduces depression, anxiety, and the effects of stress.
Improved Immune Function
The body heals itself while you sleep, which can help prevent sickness. Studies show that people who sleep less than seven hours are nearly three times more likely to develop a cold than people who sleep over eight hours.
Improved Metabolic Function
While you sleep, your body’s cortisol levels are reduced. Cortisol is a stress hormone and it activates reward centres in your brain that can be satisfied with food. The more you sleep, the more your cortisol level declines, providing you with better weight control.
Is my mattress worn out?
Many people don’t realize when their mattress has reached the end of its life. Sleeping on a worn out mattress can result in poor sleep, pain, and discomfort.
Here are some quick questions to ask yourself to determine if your mattress is worn out:
Does your mattress sag or have indentations where you lie?
Does your mattress creak or squeak?
Do you toss and turn all night long, trying to get comfortable?
Is your back sore after waking in the morning?
Is your mattress over 10 years old?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the time has come to shop for a new mattress.
What kind of mattress should I get?
There are many considerations to take into account when shopping for a new mattress and everyone has different needs. Here are some key considerations:
Do you require the same level of firmness as your partner?
Do you have particular health issues to take into account?
Do you have difficulty getting out of bed?
Do you get hot while you sleep?
There are many different kinds of mattresses on the market and it’s important to have answers to these key questions before you go mattress shopping.
What brand of mattress is the best?
We understand that you want the best mattress for the best sleep, but finding the “best” mattress brand is definitely a personal decision. Any website that tries to tell you that they offer the “best” mattress on the market should send up a red flag.
There are all kinds of mattresses to choose from including: eco-friendly, custom, adjustable, memory foam, spring coil, layered coil, gel-infused foam, pillow tops, and more. There are unique benefits to all of these types of mattresses — the key is determining which one is right for you.
At Smitty’s, we recommend a variety of mattress brands like Serta, Kingsdown, and Zedbed. We are proud to offer brands that have been recognized for their quality construction and excellent warranties — and then we go above and beyond by offering our 30-Day Comfort Guarantee for mattress and base sets.
Smitty's has great success when it comes to helping people select the right mattress. Come and visit your local Smitty’s store today. We’ll take the time, and use scientific tools like bedMATCH™, to help you find the right mattress for quality sleep.
Whether you’re preparing to host family and friends, or just want to get into the holiday spirit, we are all looking for ways that we can make our homes welcoming and festive this season.
There are thousands of websites filled with ideas, and countless magazines showcasing incredible-looking themes — but sometimes it’s the little things that make all the difference.
If you’re not looking to break the bank, but want to make a festive impact, we suggest enhancing an often overlooked space: the entryway.
First impressions are made when people step into your home, and this makes the entryway the best place to start.
Here are our top three ways to make your home welcoming:
Entryways can be both welcoming and functional. They are also high traffic areas that are highly visible and set the tone for the rest of your home. Depending on your space, we suggest adding:
A stylish bench.
This will not only look fantastic but will help your guests with putting on and taking off their boots.
A sleek console table.
These slim tables are great for entryways, offering a place to drop your keys and display seasonal decor.
A helpful coat tree.
Coat trees are not only practical for holding coats and scarves, they are also an on-trend focal point in your entryway.
Mirrors are a great way to bring light and sparkle into a space, and an entryway is an ideal space for a mirror, as people tend to check their appearance before leaving the house.
Mirrors come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and colours. You can mix and match them on a wall, or even lean them up against each other on a shelf or on the floor. The options are virtually endless.
Depending on your space, you can add a single large mirror, or multiple smaller mirrors. Alternating design and shape is on-trend and will bring visual interest to your entryway. Mirrors can also be hung or placed on a shelf or table.
There are no rules, so play around until you find the perfect arrangement.
Area rugs are often forgotten about, but they are very important as they make up an integral aesthetic of an entryway.
Stepping on the entryway rug is the first thing, and last thing, people do when they come to your home.
It is important to have a rug that can handle some wear and tear, while still looking fabulous.
Kalora rugs offer a stunning array of area rugs to suit any home. From wool, to jute, to synthetic fibres, they have it all.

December 2017’s Decorator of the Month is Dee!
Dee lived most her life in Romania where she nurtured her passion for the development of beautiful interiors. She completed her BCs in Civil Engineering, which helped her become analytical in terms of constructing living layouts that are not just aesthetically pleasing but also engineered with quality in mind.
In Canada, Dee furthered her education by completing her Interior Decorator certification. This helped her to focus on the details that bring a space to a successful completion.
At Smitty's Fine Furniture, Dee loves to connect with people. She likes to brainstorm ideas and craft spaces collaboratively with clients. Dee knows that the spaces we live in make a great deal of difference in our lives. A space must be put together with wisdom and care and, above all, the willingness to explore.
Dee believes that, "To be happy in a space means you must love it first".
Clients are often confused about what they want compared to what they actually need. Dee’s friendly nature makes it easy for relationships to be established and ideas to start flowing. Her motto is ‘form follows function’, and she will always design with that motto in mind, while impressing her clients with the results.
As we approach the end of the year, many of us think about the year that has passed: the good times and the difficult times, and we look ahead to the year to come.
For many of us, this is also a time when we choose to make resolutions for the new year.
The team at Smitty’s has a few resolutions for the new year that we’d like to share with you.
Resolution #1 - We will continue to walk the talk.
At Smitty’s, we pride ourselves on providing helpful and caring assistance to our customers. We will not sell you something you don’t need, don’t want, can’t afford, or won’t work well in your space.

Our HEART values are:
All About the Customer’s Home

Over the years, Smitty’s has supported countless events in our communities and we resolve to continue to be generous and make a difference.
Resolution #4 - We will continue to listen to our customers and provide them with expert support.
Our decorating experts are committed to helping customers make the best choices, and the right choices, for their unique needs.
Resolution #5 - We will continue to provide consistent and unparalleled service.
We are dedicated to ensuring that every time you call us, email us, or step into one of our showrooms, that you will receive personable, caring, and quality service.
Resolution #6 - We will continue to offer exciting new products and sales in the year ahead.
We get excited about new innovations and trends in furnishings and decor, and we resolve to bring those items into our showrooms for our customers. We also resolve to continue to offer you tremendous savings with our sales, so you can bring these exciting new pieces home!
Those are our 2018 resolutions, and we plan to stick to them all year long.
Every year it feels like a new challenge. What do I need to prepare in my home to host the best holiday gathering ever? How can I be the ‘host with the most’?
There are a million considerations when getting your home ready to host friends and family for a special occasion. Sometimes it’s hard to know how to prioritize everything that you want to do, and need to do, before your doorbell rings.
At Smitty’s, we get a lot of questions from customers about what they can do to spruce up their homes for the holidays. Styles and trends change, but we’ve done some digging and are happy to let you know the top decor trends for this holiday season. We hope this helps!
The coat tree has a long history and dates back to the Victorian era, when people would showcase their social position and exhibit their wealth by hanging the latest style of coats and hats in the front hallway.
The coat tree has come back into style — not so much to show off your style, but because it’s very practical and helpful.
The first thing people do when they enter your home is look for a place to hang their coats, scarves, and hats. Instead of taking coats and piling them all in a big heap on someone’s bed, a coat tree will keep coats hanging separately and organized. It will also make it easier for guests to retrieve their belongings as they leave.
This year, Smitty’s is excited to have coat trees in our showroom. Made from solid metal, this coat tree is stylish and sturdy and a great addition to your entryway.
Candles are making a big comeback. The natural glow that candles provide will add warmth to any room in your home.
This year’s trend is to mix and match candles and candle holders. While you may wish to keep the colour or metal the same when candle holders are grouped together, mixing different sizes and shapes will create dynamic focal points on your dining table, console tables/side tables, and mantles.
If you have draperies, children, or pets, you may wish to consider getting battery operated candles for your votives and candle holders. There are some battery operated candles that are very realistic and will safely shine in your home, without the worry of anything catching fire.
Adding pops of design and colour throughout your home is definitely on-trend this season. Throw cushions are an easy way to accomplish this trend.
Throw cushions will add comfort and a touch of fun to your living room, den, bedrooms, and even dining room — for added whimsy, you could have a different throw cushion for each guest at your table.
When hosting guests for an overnight, adorning the guest bedroom with colourful throw pillows is a detail that will surely make them smile.
Available in a variety of fabrics, you can mix and match colours, designs, and textures.
How is it December already? I have so much to do! I have so much to plan! How am I going to get everything done in time?
Does this sound familiar to you?
The holiday season is a fun time for many people. It’s a time to get together with friends and family, share some laughs, enjoy some tasty food, and make memories. For others, it’s a time of worry and stress.
The team at Smitty’s understands this seasonal stress and how it can make you feel anxious, exhausted, and worried. Here are a few tips to help you reduce your stress during the holidays:
Don’t worry about everything being perfect.
There’s no such thing as perfection. Trying to make your home look like a high-end magazine and your food look like it’s from a Michelin star restaurant is not reasonable. Your family and your guests will love being together, and that’s what’s most important.
Ask for help.
It’s okay to ask for help. At this time of year, people often ask what they can do to help, or what they can bring to your home. Don’t be a hero and say, “Oh nothing. Just relax.” Accept an offer of help. People like to feel needed and it will ease your stress.
Take some time to relax.
No one can work all day and night. It’s important to take breaks and rest. Spend some time relaxing on your sofa, enjoying a movie or reading a book. Even short periods of rest can make a huge difference to your overall wellness.
Have some fun.
It’s a great time of year to enjoy quality time with friends and family. From tobogganing and skiing to playing games inside — whatever you enjoy, make some time to take part in fun activities and build new memories.
The team at Smitty’s wishes you a stress-free holiday and a Happy New Year.
